Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission Data

In July 2009, The Human Rights Data Analysis Group concluded a three-year project with the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help clarify Liberia’s violent history and hold perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable for their actions. verdata: An R package for analyzing data from the Truth Commission in Colombia

The data compiled by the joint JEP-CEV-HRDAG project are publicly available from the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE). The data published by DANE is available in a format that may not be familiar to researchers who have not previously worked with statistical imputation methods. Recognizing this, verdata was created to support researchers in responsibly and correctly using the data despite the potential unfamiliarity of its structure. Researchers can use verdata to verify that the data files they are using in their analyses have not been altered, to replicate the main findings of the technical appendix, and to design new analyses of the conflict in Colombia.

Obviously, the non-American world has a digital sovereignty problem – Trump has means, motive and opportunity to order his tech companies to shut down any public official, large corporation, or individual who displeases him. In a world dominated by tech monopolies, duopolies and cartels, there’s every reason in the world to seek protection and insulation from these companies that are “too big to care” – and yet, the very same dominance that makes these companies such a danger also makes them indispensable.

Welcoming our new Technical Lead

After almost two months of searching for the perfect fit, we’re very pleased to announce that Josh Shadlen has joined HRDAG as our new technical lead. Finding Josh was no easy feat. We were looking for what many people would call a “data scientist,” that is, someone with expertise in both computer science and statistics. Patrick Ball Honored as New ASA Fellow

We’re very happy to announce that our executive director, Patrick Ball, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), as announced by ASA President Nathaniel Schenker.
