Our Copyright Policy

We have specified “Some Rights Reserved” on our website, instead of the more conventional “All Rights Reserved.” This is because some of our web content is covered by a Creative Commons license, which means that it may be copied and even re-purposed, with some stipulations. We have made this decision because HRDAG wants to contribute to the digital commons, defined by Creative Commons as “a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law.”

Our Creative Commons License

We are using the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license, also known as the BY-NC-SA license. Here is how the license permits you to re-use our work.

  • Attribution (BY). We want credit for our work. When re-using our materials, you must properly identify origin of the work. Attributing the work to HRDAG is acceptable; if you’d like to go one step farther and cite the name of the author, that would be lovely.
  • NonCommercial (NC). You may remix, tweak, and build upon our work, as long as you do not make a profit from it.
  • ShareAlike (SA). The product you create from our work must become part of the digital commons in the same manner ours is. You must license your new creations under the same terms as the HRDAG work you re-used, that is, the BY-NC-SA license.

Some of our project-specific reports, available as PDFs in the project pages and publication pages, are covered under this license, and all of our blogposts are covered. We have marked blogposts and papers as either licensed under Creative Commons, or licensed as a traditional copyright. If something is not marked and you would like to use it, please contact us for clarification on the license. You may send queries via email to info @ hrdag.org.

For more information about HRDAG’s commitment to the digital commons, read this blogpost by Lisa Rein, a co-founder of Creative Commons.

Our work has been used by truth commissions, international criminal tribunals, and non-governmental human rights organizations. We have worked with partners on projects on five continents.
