Donate to HRDAG with a Donor Advised Fund
HRDAG is pleased to accept donations to our nonprofit via Donor Advised Funds. We’ve published step-by-step directions to make donating through a DAF simple and fast. Check out the directions now or contact us at info@hrdag.org if you have any questions.
October 9 is Donor Advised Fund Day—a recently established awareness day that encourages DAF holders to activate their funds by recommending charities to receive support. You can participate by donating to HRDAG via a Donor Advised Fund or read on to learn more.
What is a Donor Advised Fund?
A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is an easy, flexible way to support charities while taking advantage of tax benefits. It’s especially useful for people who want to make a large charitable contribution in a single year—for instance, to maximize their tax deduction—but distribute grants to nonprofits over time.
You can contribute cash, stocks, or other assets to a DAF. Once donated, those assets are placed in an account that functions much like an investment portfolio: you can choose from available investment options, allowing the funds to grow tax-free. That growth means potentially more money to direct toward causes you care about.
You receive a charitable tax deduction in the year you contribute to the DAF. After that, the money legally belongs to the sponsoring charity that manages the fund, but you retain the ability to recommend grants to qualified nonprofits whenever you choose. In practice, you log in to your DAF account, select the organizations you want to support, and indicate the amounts. The DAF then sends the donations directly to those charities on your behalf. Donate today.
Why 2025 May Be a Great Time to Set Up a Donor Advised Fund
If you’ve been thinking about opening a DAF, 2025 could be a good year to do it. That’s because recent tax legislation — the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA) — introduces new limits on charitable deductions for high-income taxpayers beginning in 2026. Contributing to a Donor-Advised Fund in 2025 could help you take advantage of the current, more generous deduction rules before those changes take effect.
The details of the new rules are complicated, and how they apply depends on your income, filing status, and the type of charitable gifts you make. For an overview, see Fidelity Charitable’s summary of the charitable giving provisions in the OBBB Act or Loeb & Loeb’s legal overview of the new deduction limits. And as always, you should discuss the specifics with a qualified tax advisor.
If you already have a DAF, contributing to it in 2025 is a great way to ensure your donation occurs under the existing tax structure, not the tax structure as modified by OBBA.
2025 may also be an appealing year to recommend funds from a DAF to a charity because the stock market is particularly high right now. That means stocks or other investments within a DAF may be currently worth more and thus could have a big impact for recipient charities.
Donor Advised Funds can be appealing to donors for a number of reasons:
- They allow you to take the tax benefits of donating to charity in a single year, but then dole out the actual funds to charities over a number of years. This can be a powerful tool if you have an unusually large income for a year or two.
- They let you manage your charitable contributions through a single website, rather than visiting multiple charity websites.
- The investment options within a DAF mean your charitable contributions can grow over time, potentially giving you even more money to donate to charity.

A Donation to HRDAG Goes a Long Way
As a small human rights nonprofit, we use data analysis, rigorous scientific tools, and meticulous research to stand up to purveyors of violence. From shining a light on misconduct by U.S. police officers, to uncovering bias in screening tools used for child welfare software, to identifying patterns in clandestine graves in Mexico and so much more, we are using technology and math to defend human rights. We operate on a small, efficient budget—which means every contribution from a donor makes a big impact on our bottom line.
Please celebrate Donor Advised Fund Day by recommending HRDAG for a charitable contribution with your DAF. You can contact us with any question by emailing info@hrdag.org. And if you aren’t ready to set up a DAF, we will gladly accept donations through our website.
