Welcoming Our New Statistician

We’re so pleased to announce that on February 24, Maria Gargiulo joined the HRDAG team in the role of Statistician. Having joined the organization as an intern in 2018, Maria hit the ground running with various projects.

At HRDAG, she’ll contribute to analyses for a variety of HRDAG’s projects, starting with work estimating locations of mass graves in Mexico, assassinations of social leaders in Colombia, and matters related to artificial intelligence in the US criminal justice system. Maria will also explore extensions of multiple systems estimation and record linkage research and methods.

“After my internship two summers ago, I knew I had found my people–scientists devoted to the study of some of the worst injustices, who are thoughtful, curious, and above all else, kind,” says Maria. “I’m excited to be back thinking and learning in their presence as I nurture my statistical skills and my curiosity in the social sciences.”

“Maria’s already proven herself to us as a fine statistician,” says Megan, “and we’re so thankful to have her working with us in these uncertain times, and even more looking forward to spending time with her in the office again, where she can learn and grow, and teach us some things, too.”

Our work has been used by truth commissions, international criminal tribunals, and non-governmental human rights organizations. We have worked with partners on projects on five continents.
